Seeking Christ in Watercolors

Artwork by Ashley Chandler

The watercolor painting shown on the invitations to Stake Conference were created by Ashley Chandler from the Fishing River Ward. We asked her to share a little more about her piece and how it came about.

My artwork reflects my testimony that Jesus Christ lovingly invites each of us to come unto Him and walk the covenant path. In my watercolor painting, the children seek Him in simple, sincere ways—through the scriptures, through music, and through the beauty of God’s creation. These quiet moments of learning and worship often take place within our homes, where faith is nurtured and the Spirit can teach us personally. The continuous line that forms both the Savior and the children represents the eternal connection He offers through His Atonement and through the covenants we make and keep. As we center our homes on the gospel of Jesus Christ—studying His word, worshiping together, and striving to follow Him—we draw closer to Him and feel His guiding hand in our lives. I testify that the Savior knows and loves each of us individually, and that as we turn our hearts to Him, He is always reaching out to lead us home

Q: How long have you been painting? Is paint your preferred median, or do you make art in other ways.

A: I have always been interested in some form of artistic expression since I was young: sketching, dancing, singing, choreographing, teaching, painting, etc. I have taught both dance and art classes off and on for several years since I was a teen. My favorite creative expression is probably dance because the my instrument is always with me, but it’s followed closely by singing and painting (watercolor).

Q: How long have you worked on this piece of art? What was the creative process like.

A: This piece took a couple of months of planning, practicing techniques, to the final piece. There are different techniques used to make the whole and each one had many iterations.

Q: How does art/creativity help you feel closer to God?

A: I believe our Heavenly Father has instilled many of His personal character attributes in His children, including creativity (Genesis, for example). Knowing my creativity comes from Him helps me feel closer to Him.

Q: What do you hope people feel when they see your artwork?

A: I pray that others see the beauty of our Savior’s creations and the multifaceted nature of His love for us when they view this piece. My artwork reflects my testimony that Jesus Christ lovingly invites each of us to come unto Him and walk the covenant path.
